Champion — the Noland Creek Redcedar, by Peter de Lory; sited at Sea-Tac Airport

Champion2003–2013 · Sea-Tac Airport

Millions of travelers pass it every year without knowing the story behind it.

Commissioned by the Washington State Arts Commission for Sea-Tac Airport's South Concourse, Champion is among the most ambitious works of Peter de Lory's career — and the one seen by the most people. He traveled to the Olympic Peninsula to photograph the Noland Creek Redcedar, the tallest Western Red Cedar in the world.

The photographs were translated into a 17-foot-high mosaic in glass and stone by Stephen Miotto and the Travisanutto Mosaic Studio, fabricated in Spilimbergo, Italy — a region with a thousand-year tradition of mosaic craft. The work was permanently sited at Sea-Tac in 2013.
