Commissions & Public Art
Permanent public works · 1985–2022
Over three decades, Peter de Lory has made large-scale commissioned and public work for transit systems, utilities, airports, schools, and state arts collections across the Pacific Northwest. Several remain permanently installed and seen by millions.
Champion — Sea-Tac Airport
2003–2013. Peter de Lory photographed the Noland Creek Redcedar, the tallest Western Red Cedar in the world; the image was translated into a 17-foot-high glass and stone mosaic permanently sited at Sea-Tac Airport’s South Concourse.
Railwork — Sound Transit
2000–2013. Thirteen years as artist-in-residence for Sound Transit, documenting the construction of five light rail stations from Seattle to Tacoma. Published as a 48-page catalog.
Citywork — Seattle Public Utilities
1999–2000. 170 photographs, 66 pieces — the entirety of Seattle Public Utilities: drainage, wastewater, solid waste, community services. Exhibited at Bank of America Gallery and permanently installed throughout SPU facilities.
Seattle Water Department
1996. A nine-month Seattle Arts Commission residency tracing the path of water from the Cascade Mountains to the city’s faucets.
Flora — Longfellow Creek
2004. Five enamel-on-steel way-finding signs sited along Longfellow Creek in West Seattle, combining black-and-white creek flora with vivid color fields.
A Pathway
2015. Nineteen images made in and around Hayes Freedom High School, Camas, Washington, for the State Art Collection.
The River — Nooksack Valley Middle School
2022. A multi-panel photographic installation following the undammed Nooksack River from Nooksack Falls to Bellingham Bay, acquired for the Washington State Art Collection with the Nooksack Valley School District, Everson.
