The Cape — Cape Cod, by Peter de Lory

The Cape1964–early 1980s

Photography is not about the thing photographed. It is about how that thing looks photographed.Garry Winogrand, quoted by Peter de Lory

Peter de Lory began The Cape in 1964, after leaving Cape Cod for college, and returned to it over the years through the early 1980s — aerials and landscapes of the place he is from. The touchstone is Edward Hopper: “that sense of simplify, and moment just frozen.” In his words, it is less a memoir than a look back to understand where he is from — “the feeling of being in this sparse, but somehow intimate land and seascape.”
